About the Project

Embrace of the Dune is a meditative armchair shaped by the eternal poetry of the desert — a place where a person meets solitude not as isolation, but as revelation. In designing this piece, Yury Goncharov explores the emotional landscape of wandering, surrender, and renewal.

The narrative begins with a traveler crossing an endless wilderness — unaware that the journey will strip away doubt, fear, and the weight of memory. The desert becomes both mirror and mentor: it purifies like water yet demands absolute honesty. When exhaustion overcomes the traveler, they collapse onto the warm slope of a dune. Instead of rejecting them, the sand rises to hold them — forming a soft, surreal embrace.

This moment of surrender becomes the essence of the armchair.

Design Concept

Embrace of the Dune captures the way sand intuitively shapes itself around the human body. Its flowing curves echo the wind-carved geometry of dunes, while its enveloping form offers a sense of grounding, comfort, and quiet introspection.

Goncharov approaches the chair as a sculptor: the first prototype was hand-formed to mimic organic movement — not designed but revealed. This intuitive silhouette was later digitized and refined through advanced fabrication methods to preserve every intentional imperfection.

Craftsmanship

Each chair is produced using a hybrid process that combines digital precision with artisanal finishing. The piece is coated with a durable eco-polymer and hand-finished to achieve a surface that reflects the tactile softness of sand while ensuring long-lasting structural integrity.

Depending on the chosen finish, the chair can read as a monolithic desert sculpture, a contemporary object of collectible design, or a sensorial piece of functional art.

Experience

To sit in Embrace of the Dune is to release tension — to “sink in” emotionally as much as physically. The chair invites its user to pause, breathe deeply, and allow transformation to happen.
