Vis Leyden

About the Project

The name Vis Leyden combines two sources of inspiration. The Latin word vis means strength, energy, and inner power, while Leyden refers to the Dutch city of Leiden, where the Leyden jar was invented in the 18th century — the first device capable of storing an electrical charge and the precursor to the modern capacitor.

Design Concept

The concept of the chair emerged from the idea of materializing energy in physical form. Its volume resembles matter at a moment of maximum concentration — as if a charge has been compressed within the object, ready to be released. The metallic foil layer on the surface directly references the construction of the Leyden jar, where metal shells were essential for storing electrical energy.

Inlays of small metallic particles create the effect of scattered sparks — a visual metaphor for static electricity gradually escaping beyond the form. They bring a sense of movement to the surface and reinforce the feeling of hidden energy within.

Experience

Vis Leyden explores the relationship between matter and energy, between a physical object and the invisible forces it contains. More than a chair, it is a sculptural object that embodies potential, tension, and transformation.

Sitting in it, one becomes part of this interaction — as if connecting to a source of energy slowly radiating from within the form.
